Jokes

Dear Avril,

your sense of humour is really developing and you really love trying to make others laugh! today at dinner we traded jokes "yummy in my tum" "yummy in my knee" "yummy in my toes" and you were hysterical.

you were such a trooper getting the first round of your H1N1 vaccination! not even a whimper! my arm was sore for days and i was expecting you to be grumpy, but you were fine!

you are so excited about the new baby and cannot wait for your little sister to be born! you talk about her every day, about how much you love her and you collect flowers and leaves for her and draw her pictures. any day now she'll be gracing us with her presence!

tickling your teeth

Dear Avril,

We went for your first trip to the dentist this week! You watched dad get his teeth cleaned first and then it was your turn... you were a little nervous when the chair went up and then back but opened up like a good girl and let the dentist 'tickle your teeth'. You were so pleased with the 'smile' bouncy ball and new tigger toothbrush that the dental hygenist Sara gave you, you were bouncing around yourself with energy. Next time we'll get your teeth cleaned too, just like dad!

Summer of Fun

Dear Av,

it's been a long while since i last wrote and it's because you've been keeping me so busy!

We just had a fun weekend with 'Papa' down for a visit for his birthday. You guys had a blast playing with play-doh and singing songs and you helped him blow out the candles on the birthday cake.

Potty training is going well with you, you now can push the stool up, lift the lid, put the seat on and go all by yourself! Such a quick learner.

You're continuing your daredevil ways in the swimming pool. We haven't had to use lifejacket or water wings in quite some time - you just wrap a noodle around your tummy. Today though you were getting a bit too brave. Without the noodle, you can't quite keep yourself up out of the water and yet you ran and jumped right in the pool before i was even ready! it didn't phase you though, you just bobbed for a minute under the surface as you are very good at holding your breath, until i grabbed you. then, on the slide, you went time and time again counting out "One two three four five... here comes the big cannonball!!!!" and down you would fly with a big splash. after a while you stood at the top of the slide and leaped off!!! lucky you didn't crank your head :)

We did all kinds of visiting and you were a trooper throughout this summer. At clare's wedding you were an absolute darling going up the aisle in your 'pretty princess dress' with a big smile on your face. lots of kids your age would have balked at the sight of the huge church and dozens of people staring at them, but it hardly phased you - you just strolled up to the front and played your part up on the stage with poise. At the reception, you didn't like your dinner and then fell asleep during the speeches, so you didn't make it upstairs for the dancing, but that was ok, as mom was pretty tired too, as she is pregnant with your new baby sister!

'Baby Elise Ariel', as you like to call her, is due in december and you seem quite excited about it, often kissing mom's tummy and talking about playing with her. you went with mom to a shower for the baby and came home thinking that the new bunny towel was yours; we had to explain it was for elise and you seemed to take it ok - i'm optimistic that you won't be too jealous a sibling.

froggy is still your favourite nighttime pal, you won't sleep without him, nor without 'big blankie'. your favourite foods are still berries and pasta, and will not eat very many vegetables but i got you to try an asparagus a couple of weeks ago. didn't go over well.

you can say your abc's and sing lots of songs. we often dance in the kitchen, which you love, especially up in my arms jumping up and down. dora is definitely your favourite tv shows and princesses are all the rage.

Dear Avril,

I haven't written in so long!

Your birthday was a huge hit - you had so much fun running around in your dress with your new princess elbow pads and helmet on. Easter was fun too, up in Orillia you had a fun morning easter egg hunt while we all watched you search and fill your little basket.

Now that the warm weather is back, we've been going to the park a lot, taking cooper for walks and playing at the playground. you LOVE to swing and giggled like crazy when i showed you "underdog". We're still swimming every week, and you've invented this game where you spin around with your eyes closed humming - it's very cute. Speaking of inventing games, you always want to play Circolookie, not sure what the rules are, but it usually involves jumping around on the coloured foam interlocks in the living room. Another is "don't eat me giant" - you pretend to be afraid and run giggling into your room or the bathroom and close the door until i come to get you. Your inventiveness comes out at dinnertime now, you always want to name your forks/spoons, 'joe' or 'joanie' eg.

Dear Av,

You're getting pretty excited for your birthday, and can even say the date 'march twenty-fiff!'. you're getting very loveable, often spontaneously giving hugs. you sat down in my lap on the weekend and said 'i like sitting in your lap. you're my friend.' simiarly, you gave lauren at daycare a big hug and said 'you're my friend', afterwards holding hands while playing. so cute! you also showed great concern when i bonked my knee: 'what's wrong daddy?' and then 'awww' and kissing it better!

Family Day

Dear Avril,

We had a great family day! You absolutely had the best day, and that was evidenced by the purely angelic smile on your face as we cuddled before bed; eyes closed, a little closed mouth grin and every sign of peace and happiness. I wish we could all have more moments like that.

We started off the day with a walk with cooper in the wagon, and then came in for a snack and to wake mommy up for swimming! you loved having your mom there in the pool, and i wish our schedule allowed us to go more often like that. After lunch and a nap we went hiking in short hills, and you sat merrily in my backpack the whole way without a complaint. Our very muddy hike went for longer than we originally planned, and it almost backfired as we lost the last light just as we were getting back, but it was worth it. we spotted the herd of deer that live in the park and we had a little talk about them... i said that it was getting dark and that the deer would have to sleep outside. you promptly wondered whether or not they get stories before bed! so cute! you also asserted that you thought that cooper would be afraid of deer. we finished off the day with a dinner with auntie, jerome and steph and then as i said before a great songs/cuddle before bed.

Dear Avril,

You were quite the 'artiste' today with the magnadoodle! you drew a fish that actually looked like a fish, and then i drew eyes and a mouth and you completed the smiley face by drawing the head and nose! you also showed some flair, very meticulously drawing points and then using a bug stacker (magnet inside) to add some shading effects... too bad they weren't on paper so i could have saved them!
Dear Avril,

We missed you sooooo much while we were away! i was moved to tears thinking about you while Lou and I were talking about our kids. I missed your hugs and your laughs and "Daddy, readabook. ok, what's next?" We had a great time of course, and I'm looking forward to the summer when i can take you to the beach and we can swim and play in the waves. Your cough got quite bad while we were gone and Auntie and Jerome had to take you to the doctor, we're so lucky we had them to take care of you! It seems to be getting a bit better, but we were very worried when we found out in Mexico that you had to be taken out of daycare :(

It was amazing to come back and hear the change in your voice - you've discovered your "R"s! It's now Dora (not Dola) and it's Cooper (not Coopah)!

happy new year!

Dear Avril,

We had quite a great christmas holiday! i was fortunate to be off for almost 3 weeks (minus a couple of monday night shifts and we got to spend so much time together!

Your mom and I braved the cold and slushy wet snow/rain that was falling for the santa claus parade. mom brought hot chocolate and we shivered as the floats went by. I think you took to the guy in the dog costume; santa was sort of a non-event and anticlimactic as he whizzed by in a tiny sleigh.

We did so much visiting over the holidays it was exhausting and almost had to catch my breath after the holidays were over. Grandpa ('Papa') and Grandma came down to visit and you really enjoyed having them down, always asking after them when they weren't right there and wanting to show them your bears, doggies, etc.

Christmas morning was so much fun i forgot to take any photos! Grandma gave us a video camera thought, so i got to film you opening some of your presents, which you just loved doing.

You had a blast on new year's eve - you and mazlyn chased each other around (which you remembered today and asked about!)

Your speech is now unbelievably coherent and thoughtful and your memory seems limitless. You know your abc's by heart (with coaching from mom) and you can sing the whole 'twinkle twinkle little star' song by yourself. you had a very cute moment just sitting there singing by yourself.
